Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Started with few elephants as a place to care for wounded and abandoned elephants, adding members fast to become one of the largest elephant care centers in the world Pinnawala now is a research center and holds captive breeding programs to help steady the falling elephant population in the country. Now a popular tourist attraction provides shelter to over 100 big and small who appreciates the care and refuge provided to them. The elephants are fed 3 times a day and the visitors can join in to feed the little baby elephants their daily dose of milk for a small additional fee that goes back in to the welfare of the animals. The location provides a rare opportunity to get up close to these giants and the playful calf's and is in the must visit list of anyone spending a holiday in the country.
